Starting point: hiking parking lot "Weisse Brücke" (White Bridge)
Access: by the Falkensteinstein bus 2, bus stop "Weisse Brücke", by car: hiking parking lot "Weisse Brücke"
Duration: Ascent over the Höllbachgspreng about 3 hours, descent about 1.5 hours
For the ascent over the Höllbachgspreng solid shoes, good condition and a sure foot are necessary.
From the parking lot, the path leads to the signs "Silberblatt" over a forest road. After only a short walk, the natural, original forest "swallows" the hiker. Soon the path then forks from the forest road and is from there a narrow path. The path upwards more and more. After about 1 hour it is advisable to take the break at a magical little mountain lake. There are also benches available at the local mountain rescue hut.
After recharging your batteries, the most challenging part of the hike can be tackled - the ascent through the Höllbachgspreng. Sturdy shoes, good condition and a sure foot are highly recommended for this part of the hike. You will be rewarded for the effort with a fantastic view. It should be noted that the path is not accessible in all weathers.
An alternative route is signposted.
As soon as the rocky section is reached, it is only slightly uphill to the summit of the small Falkenstein (1190 metres). The stunning view over the valleys up to the Großer Arber let forget all efforts. Now it is only a short hike through the mountain forest to the summit of the Großer Falkenstein at 1315 metres. From here, a stunning view up to the Alps is possible.
The rescue shelter with hosting on the summit of the mountain is opend from 01.05. - 31.10. In the winter months mostly only on weekends (Tel 0049 9925-903366). Overnight accommodation is possible if you arrange it in advance.
Downhill, the fastest route is via the signe "Eibe". In some quite steep serpentines the way leads in a walking time of about 1 hour back to Kreuzstrassl. Directly after the end of the forest, there is a 2 kilometres-long cycle path which leads you back to the parking lot.
